Overview

Our clinical observerships are well-established supervised training programmes and many international universities and postgraduate institutions send their students, trainees and clinicians to us every year to gain unique and valuable experience working at our hospitals.

The duration of our observerships can vary and depends on your development goals and availability at our hospitals.

What you will learn

Each clinical observership programme is tailored to your development goals and below is a selection of opportunities will have access to:

  • One-to-one mentoring with a selected consultant.
  • A programme coordinator that is dedicated to you.
  • Gain an understanding of the NHS healthcare system.

All observerships are fully supervised. When supervised, you will be able to:

  • Take a clinical history.
  • Shadow medical staff in outpatient clinics.
  • Accompany clinical staff on ward rounds and MDT meetings.
  • Participate in patient examinations and discussion on a diagnosis.
  • Shadow within our operating theatre.
  • Observe non-invasive, low-risk external imaging.

 You can gain training in the following areas of specialism:

  • Adult congenital heart disease
  • Cardiology
  • Cardiac surgery
  • Paediatric respiratory medicine
  • Respiratory and critical care
  • Thoracic surgery

Entry requirements

Our clinical observerships are open to both those with and without UK General Medical Council (GMC) registration, and international applicants are actively encouraged to apply.

Please use our contact form to submit your CV with a cover letter detailing your area of interest for the clinical observership. We only accept application six months ahead of your preferred start date. 

Should we be able to accommodate your request we will send you an application form to complete followed by an invitation to an interview.

If you are an international applicant, your English proficiency will be assessed at the interview. 

NB: Cardiology applications are currently closed and will reopen in the New Year.
