Biography

Dr Vasilis Kouranos is a consultant respiratory physician at Royal Brompton Hospital. 

Dr Kouranos completed his training in respiratory medicine in 2013 at the largest university hospital in Athens, the General Hospital of Thoracic Diseases. 

Dr Kouranos also holds a master’s degree in Thoracic Oncology in 2011 after a publication about antibiotic prophylaxis of chemotherapy-induced neutropenic lung cancer patients.

Dr Kouranos received a research scholarship grant for his study on screening CMR patients with biopsy-proven sarcoidosis and in 2017 was awarded his PhD at the University of Athens after his work was published in a journal which effects existing practice in the field.

He joined Royal Brompton hospital in 2016 as a clinical research fellow to Professor Athol Wells and shortly after he was offered the role of senior clinical fellow, and in parallel, acting consultant in the interstitial lung disease department.

Clinical expertise

Dr Vasilis Kouranos undertook a fellowship in interstitial lung disease and sarcoidosis at Royal Brompton Hospital. He has a sub-specialist expertise in sarcoidosis and predominantly cardiac sarcoidosis, which was the subject of his PhD thesis.

Dr Kournos has a wealth of experience in management of patients with sarcoidosis, interstitial lung disease and pulmonary fibrosis. Additionally he also manages patients with general respiratory problems such as:

  • an unexplained cough
  • asthma
  • bronchitis
  • chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • respiratory infections
  • bronchiectasis.
Research interests

Dr Vasilis Kouranos’s completed his PhD on the screening of cardiac sarcoidosis with cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and he has also been awarded an MSc in thoracic oncology. 

Dr Kouranos is a keen participant in clinical research and as part of his research activities he has co-designed and contributed as principal investigator in clinical trials in treatment of pulmonary and cardiac sarcoidosis. He is also the course organiser of the Annual Cardiac Sarcoidosis symposium with national and international delegates. 

Publications

Dr Vasilis Kouranos has established the Royal Brompton Hospital Cardiac Sarcoidosis Registry, which is the largest in the world. Additionally he is the author of over 60 peer-reviewed articles, including original papers, editorials, abstracts and book chapters.

Teaching

Dr Vasilis Kouranos is an honorary senior lecturer at Imperial College, London. Dr Kouranos regularly speaks at national and international meetings and conferences to share his knowledge.
