Consultant cardiac morphologist
Specialises in the study of the heart to better understand congenital and pathological cardiac anatomy.
Biography

Professor S Yen Ho is a consultant cardiac morphologist for Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals, studying the structure of the heart to better understand congenital and pathological cardiac anatomy.

Professor Ho is presented with referrals of heart specimens and cases from around the UK and overseas. She is an expert in the post-mortem examination of normally structured hearts with arrhythmia and hearts with congenital malformations with special interest in the cardiac conduction system.

Clinical expertise

Professor Ho is well renowned for her research and education projects and regularly speaks at international conferences.

Additionally, she also teaches courses in:

  • cardiology
  • electrophysiology
  • paediatric cardiology
  • cardiac surgery
  • pathology and veterinary science.

Within her time, she has represented Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals, including the European Congress of Cardiology, the European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgeons, Asia Pacific Paediatric Cardiology Society, and Association of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons of Asia, the European Heart Rhythm Association, the Asia-Pacific Heart Rhythm Association and the Heart Rhythm Society (USA).

Research interests

Professor Ho’s research interests include:

  • correlating morphology with imaging techniques, such as echocardiography
  • MRI
  • CT
  • the anatomy of the heart relevant to interventional cardiology
  • electrophysiology in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias
  • surgical treatments for these conditions.

Publications

Professor Ho has written 13 books, including:

  • Anatomy for electrophysiologists: a practical handbook
  • Echocardiography in congenital heart disease made simple
  • Congenital heart disease in mammals
  • Anatomy of the heart by multislice computed tomography
  • Atlas of real-time 3D transoesophageal echocardiography
  • Congenital Heart Disease – a surgical color atlas

In addition to this, she has had more than 400 papers published in peer-reviewed journals covering the multi-facets of her scientific/medical research.

Teaching

Professor Ho has developed education of cardiac morphology in 3D. Her human anatomy and morphology short courses are recognised internationally, attracting participants from all corners of the world. Her annual course “hands-on cardiac morphology” is the go-to course, she is running it twice a year to increasing numbers of participants.

Moreover, she has run several of her short courses abroad, e.g.in S.E.Asia. In addition, she conducts morphology seminars for internal staff and external institutions.

Incorporated in her role, she also teaches international students and mentors visiting fellows.
