The tricuspid valve: the new frontier

This Grand Round, presented by Professor Francesco Maisano, explores the tricuspid valve (TV) as the new frontier in valvular heart disease, highlighting how the past decade has transformed understanding and management of tricuspid insufficiency. The session reviews the evolution of knowledge driven by novel transcatheter and surgical technologies, provides an overview of the mechanisms and clinical impact of tricuspid regurgitation, and critically examines current interventional strategies and their outcomes. Particular emphasis is placed on the crucial question of timing—how to identify the right patients and the right moment to intervene—through an integrated assessment of disease phenotype, advanced imaging, and emerging biomarkers.

Professor Maisano is cardiac surgeon with extensive experience in standard cardiovascular treatments and innovative technologies. His core expertise focuses on minimally invasive and catheter-based interventions for valvular diseases and heart failure; he has more than 30 years of experience in leading cardiovascular innovation research and development programmes.
