Dr Ali Vazir

Dr Ali Vazir is a consultant in cardiology and critical care at Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals.

Whilst studying Medicine at Imperial College London, he won multiple awards and prizes, and received his PhD from the university’s National Heart and Lung Institute.

He completed his training in cardiology, general internal medicine and acute care in several London hospitals, including Royal Brompton, Harefield, St Mary’s and King’s College hospitals.

Following his training, he attained a post-doctoral senior research fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, USA.

Dr Vazir works across clinical trials to develop new drugs and therapies for heart failure and cardiovascular disease, as well as research on novel echocardiography techniques.

He has presented, lectured and chaired at numerous leading national, European and American meetings.

Dr Vazir has also received awards for his research from eminent organisations, including the European Respiratory Society and the Heart Failure Association of the European Society of Cardiology.

Dr Vazir specialises across several cardiology areas, including:

• cardiac surgery
• cardiomyopathy
• echocardiography (in particular, 3D trans-oesophageal echocardiography for procedures)
• heart failure
• peri-operative care and high dependency critical care
• transcatheter valve intervention such as MitraClip
• sleep disordered breathing
• ultrafiltration
• valvular heart disease (mitral, aortic, tricuspid valve disease).

Dr Vazir has published extensively in the field of heart failure, sleep apnoea, cardiopulmonary exercise testing, acute cardiology and echocardiography in numerous high impact international peer reviewed journals, including:

• European Heart Journal
• European Journal of Heart Failure
• European Respiratory Journal
• International Journal of Cardiology
• Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

He is also the associate editor for ESC Heart Failure, a journal of the European Society of Cardiology.
